NY Times columnist William Safire dead at 79

Safire died at a hospice in Rockville, Maryland, after suffering from pancreatic cancer, spokeswoman Diane McNulty said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - William Safire, the former speechwriter for Richard Nixon who won a Pulitzer Prize for columns on politics and language for The New York Times, died on Sunday, the newspaper said. He was 79.
Safire, known for his conservative voice on The Times' mostly liberal opinion pages, received a Pulitzer for commentary in 1978. In 1979 he began writing the newspaper's On Language column, in which he examined the origins of words and phrases and their proper usage.
Before joining The Times in 1973, Safire worked in politically oriented public relations and joined the Nixon White House speechwriting team in 1968.
He wrote several novels including the bestseller "Full Disclosure," as well as several nonfiction books on politics and language. A New York City native, he was popular even with readers who took issue with his conservative political views in part because he enthusiastically engaged them and solicited contributions and input on the origins and foibles of modern language.

His last On Language column appeared two weeks ago. Entitled "Bending the curve," it explored the history and popularity of that phrase.

He ended the piece with a quote from a reader who had written to thank him for a recent column's citation, which the reader said had refreshed "the halcyon days of my youth."

Safire was married and had two children.

S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson Heckles POTUS During Speech

Wilson called the White House to apologize to President Obama in person, but was routed to White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, according to Associated Press. He also issued a statement: “This evening I let my emotions get the best of me,” he said. “While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility.”
In an official act consisting of a shocking and embarrassing breach of decorum, a Republican House Member, Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., shouted “You lie” at President Obama during his speech to Congress Wednesday. His outburst came just as President Obama addressed concerned about whether illegal immigrants would obtain medical care under the Administration’s proposed heath care reforms.

Wilson’s wasn’t the only interruption during Obama’s speech, but it was the most notable.

“Everybody was stunned,” Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA, said of Wilson’s eruption. “It was just something that nobody had ever witnessed before. We all felt embarrassed.”
Republicans froze; several glanced in Wilson’s direction.
“There’ll be time enough to consider whether or not we ought to make it clear that that action is unacceptable in the House of Representatives,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said late Wednesday on WTOP radio when asked about possible punishment for Wilson. “I’ve talked to Republican members who share that view.”
